Shed That Ego And Go Find Your Champion

Updated: Jul 27, 2019

We totally underestimate the value of a champion in our adult lives. Because our big, fat egos get in the way.

About a week ago, I was writing an article for a client, and as I often do, I watched a few TED Talks to draw on ideas and inspiration.

This time around, I happened upon this rather popular talk, “Every kid needs a champion.

Educator Rita Pierson talks about how every child, no matter what, needs a champion: “An adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection, and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.”

But when does that need cease? When do we stop needing a champion? When we ‘grow up’? When do we ‘grow up’?

Truth is, it never stops.

Every adult needs a champion just as much as every child does. Because adulthood is hard and ridden with challenges, and more often than not, school hasn't equipped you with everything you need to face these worldly pressures.

Now of course, our adulthood champions aren't always going to be teacher or mentor figures. They could be bosses, spouses, a friend or a parent even. Through the hardest days and your biggest accomplishments, you need them around.

What’s changed though, is that as a child you’re more accepting of a champion. You’re willing to step down and crane your neck to look up at someone.

Somewhere along the road between childhood and adulthood, you shed that ability and started to wear your ego around instead.

Somewhere, all the motivational messages started to become the voice in your head. YOU got this, YOU can do this, YOU have everything you need right inside of you. The strength you muster up to stand up and face the world becomes a self-centered act that’s up to you, not one of support from the people around you.

Doesn’t it make you laugh when you hear the words ‘self-made millionaire’? Nobody’s self-made. Not literally and not figuratively.

If you’re a typical fast-paced urbanite, and you’ve managed to shelf away your champion(s), forgotten to let them know how important they are to you, then now is the time for you to blow the dust off that shelf.

Shed your pride and let your champion know how much they mean to you. Hopefully, someone does the same back for you.

The world becomes a better place when we’re empowering each other, and knowing that we’re empowering each other doesn’t fester ego, it cultivates a sense of purpose and fulfilment.

We could use more people that live a life of purpose and fulfillment, don't you think?
